Polish retail treasury bonds: COI, EDO, ROR, TOS - how to compare them

We compare retail series: inflation-linked, fixed and floating. We explain when different types behave differently and what early redemption means.

Polish retail treasury bonds are a separate world from Catalyst-listed bonds. They are bought through retail distribution channels, not through an exchange order book. Series differ by tenor, interest formula and early redemption terms.

Short fixed-rate series, such as OTS or TOS, are simpler to forecast: the rate is known for the period defined in the issue letter. Floating-rate series, such as ROR or DOR, adjust interest according to the benchmark described in the terms.

Inflation-linked series, such as COI and EDO, usually have a first-year rate and then a formula based on inflation plus margin. That is not a guarantee of real profit in every scenario: tax, inflation observation lag, compounding or payout mechanics and early redemption fees all matter.

Compare series through scenarios. If inflation falls quickly, a fixed-rate bond can look different from an inflation-linked one. If inflation stays high, longer inflation-linked series may track CPI better, but they lock capital for longer and have their own exit rules.

In practice, first define investment horizon and liquidity need, then compare after-tax rate, compounding frequency, early redemption cost and reinvestment risk after a short series ends. The highest starting coupon alone is not enough to choose an instrument.

If you live abroad, ordinary retail savings bonds are also available to nonresidents. PKO BP and Pekao describe in-person service at bond sales points for them; do not assume that resident online registration is available to you. Before visiting, confirm documents, PLN funding and payout arrangements. COI and EDO reference Polish inflation, while EUR or USD returns also depend on exchange rates. See “Can someone from abroad buy Polish bonds? Where and how?” for the practical route.
